about the rod maker

In 2014 Rob began crafting split cane rods.  With generous tuition and guidance from Master Bamboo Fly Rod maker Nick Taransky, the craft started in his small beach side shed of Indented Head, Victoria.  The joy of creating using these traditional hand skills lends itself to Rob’s design aesthetics and trade capabilities. As a qualified Cabinet Maker with professional qualifications in Interior Design and Architecture his design capabilities, appreciation for working with natural products and history of fly fishing has led to 13 Mile Rods.

Over the learning and development years of building rods I have been inspired by my fellow rod makers, masters and tutors from Cressy Cane who contribute to my growth from their shared knowledge and talent.

In all design work, I work closely with the client to understand their vision and anticipated fishing intentions creating a brief to appreciate fishing methods, waters types and personal expectations. It is my greatest achievement to present a rod that is designed and crafted to bring joy to casting, an appreciation for a time honored material and your personal skill development in this sport of fly fishing.

If you are looking for a rod that culminates all the individual aspects of this sport into that moment of casting for the Australian and New Zealand waters, we can begin that journey together.
