RODS

New to fly fishing or an old hand in the rivers and lakes of our world, 13 Mile wants to be your first, last and forever cane rod. A legacy to capture stories, bamboo that imbues the tension of the ones that got away and gives you the sporting agility in hidden waters. 13 Mile Rods are our response to your fly fishing desires.

From tempering the bamboo, splitting and planning the cane,  cork forming, choosing the type of finishing details of from custom handles to wood spacer and working it on the lathe.  Shaping the reel seat, picking colours and styles for wrapping silk thread to complete finishes including sewing of rod socks and to presentation aluminum powder coated rod tubes.  Each piece on each rod is made in the hands of the Rod Maker with your collaboration of insight and choice.

You and the Rod Maker together can form the Rod that suits your experience. As all fisher people know, it requires patience, attention to detail and the journey is as thrilling as the destinations you will fish. Learn more about the process below.

 

ROD MAKER

A native to Victorian waters, rod maker Rob Morwood is a graduated master in split cane fly rod building, honing his craft to a commercial grade of sporting equipment for over 10 years.

Rob has developed his interests in spey rod fishing and now specialises in crafting tapers for 2 hand rods from lite trout mid 10 feet to 12 foot skagit/scandi 480grain + up to ‘T’14 sink tips.

13 Mile is inspired from a slice of land on the West Coast South Island of New Zealand, also known for its protected and breathtakingly beautiful rivers, where family ties are strengthened.
